A Royal Copenhagen of Denmark decorative annual Christmas plate depicting 'Greenland Scenery' and the year 1978. This is a lovely example of their blue and white porcelain. The makers stamp can be found on the back along with the factory mark, the three wavy lines above each other, symbolizing Denmark’s three straits: Storebælt, Lillebælt and Øresund.  The artist's initials also appear as 'KL'  for Kai Lange.

The tradition of Christmas plates started hundreds of years ago in Europe, when wealthy people presented their servants with sweet treats served on decorative plates of wood or metal at Christmas time. The servants referred to these gifts as their Christmas Plate. In 1895 Bing & Grøndahl produced the first Christmas plate made from porcelain and in 1908 the Royal Copenhagen factory commenced their production. A limited number of plates are made each year and have been collectable for over 100 years. Each plate is only made in the year of issue, after which the mould is destroyed, and the design is never made again.

In perfect condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. Highly collectable.

Size: 18.2cm diameter
