A fantastic Victorian commemorative Bell's of Glasgow low relief jug celebrating the marriage of the Prince of Wales with Princess Alexandra of Denmark, Windsor, 10 March 1863 with the jug having been made around that time.

Better known as 'Bertie', he was notorious for being the philandering Prince and his irresponsibility was detested by his parent Queen Victoria and Albert, Prince Consort.

Made by J&M.P. Bell & Co, Pottery in Glasgow as shown by raised round moulded maker's mark.

Each side has a portrait medallion of the prince and princess framed by crowned wreaths and sprays of roses, shamrocks and thistles. The pattern includes the Prince of Wales feathers under the spout.  In good condition, there is one small piece of damage to the top of the handle, no cracks or restoration and little sign of wear. Rare to find, especially in such good condition for the age.

Established in late 1840 or 1841, at the corner of Stafford St and Pulteney St, Glasgow, by brothers John and Matthew Perston Bell. The initial partnership trading as J.& M. P. Bell, Earthenware manufacturers. Quite quickly afterwards this became J.& M. P. Bell & Co.
Bell’s Pottery was amongst the most successful of the several pottery companies which existed in Glasgow between the mid 18th and 19th centuries.

Size:  21cm tall at handle.
